"Today myself and Lena (Florences daughter) decorated our first Christmas tree without Nanny. It was hard but a happy thing to do in her memory. As her birthday approaches , I try to remember the happy things she would say around these times, and dwell on that. "

About her

Florence Walker

Florence Marie Walker

Born: December 23rd, 1942

Passed on: August 28th, 2016

Florence Marie Walker was born on the rugged Island of Cape Breton in 1942, where she lived a life filled with storms and an abundance of suffering. She spent the last years of her life in the quaint community of Wilson Creek, living a life she filled with grace, creativity and generosity of spirit. She was the exquisite Mom of Lena and John Walker, and the wisest of grandmothers to her four grandsons, Isaiah, Tyler, Shane and Noah. She was described as a sage of a woman, who offered many a safe harbor from life’s struggles, a gentle listening ear and an ample dose of good counsel, whenever the opportunity presented itself. Her favorite question to ask: “Who Am I?” and her favorite answer: “I am always becoming!” Right to her very last breath she was becoming more fully herself living and sharing her gifts. She had the strength of a lion, and the resilience of a wolf. A woman of deep faith and perception. Our hearts are burning as we walk through the fire of losing her, and only time, tears and the sharing of happy memories will enable healing in those who loved her. She had an extraordinary cast of carers, friends, and support persons around her as she struggled with critical illness over the last 23 months. We would like to acknowledge the persons who shared her journey and offer them each our greatest thanks: Joyce, Lucette, Keith, Delma, Pat, Dr. Stinson, Tomomi, Tracey, Penny, Leslie, Jill, Petrina, Bernadette, Sue, Jackie, Gail, Father Jack, The Threshold Choir, The Ruby Slipper, her four sisters: Mary, Anne, Jane, and Kathleen. On August 28, early in the morning, surrounded by her children and grandchildren she took her last breath, and like a leaf on a tree, gently blowing winds of the love, freed her and off she went to Heaven’s Door. A Mass in her honor will be held on Saturday September 3rd from 11:00 am to Noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gibson’s, BC at 956 Gibson’s Way. All are welcome! The service will be followed by a Celebration of Life reception in the church hall from 12-2pm. In Florence’s memory, please make donations of money, time, goods, toys, and gifts to Yew Transition House in Sechelt, BC. After Saturday the 3rd, you may go to www.inmemoriam.ca to write comments, share your memories, letters, poems, and to express your thoughts about this dynamic woman of creativity, wisdom and change.
